Turntable Animation!!!!

Here it is! Although youtube kinda killed the quality quite a bit, but oh well. So, I was only able to render this out after I installed windows 7 64 bit and got 4 more gigs of RAM, just like i predicted. And dealing with hair shadows was a pain too. Either way, here's the turntable render. Hope you guys like it, I know i do. Next step - rigging! Who's excited?

Here's a sample of what the original video looks like

And here's a face closeup with slightly reworked materials

  4. Hey there ! I just came across your blog and I have to say, the work you've done is awe-inspiring ! You're a very talented person.

On a side note, I'm a 3D student myself and I was kinda wondering how you went on about creating and styling the hair for your girl model with Shave and a Haircut ? Any tips or hints would be of great aid to me !

Oh, and it would have been interesting to see a wireframe version of your turntable too ^^

  5. Hey Mauricio, just saw your comment.

Well, Shave and a Haircut is very tricky, at least it was for me. There's actually separate sets of hair before the scrunchies (or whatever those things are called) and for the pigtails. And there's a hair constraint inside the scrunchies for the "head hair" so to say, and the hair growth origin for the pigtails. Also the pigtails are spline hair: i drew the splines and used them to make the hair with, and the hair on the head is default recombed hair. And yes it's very easy to comb, but probably not into anythign too sophisticated. The reason i used such a complex setup was because otherwise i couldn't make the hairdo hold its shape as soon as i turned on the dynamic simulation, hair would just fall along the sides of the head, but this way it seems to behave ok-ish, at least on the static model, who knows what'll happen once it's rigged, hehe

Yeah I think I'll upload the wireframe turntable too at some point, good idea

  6. Hi again !

Thank you for the reply, I'm guessing I won't be making any super complex hairstyles then ^^

I've been fiddling around with S&aH and I'm sure you've noticed already ( and it might be a little too late for it), but there are some settings under the Dynamic Properties in the Attribute Editor of your hair.
Some of them affect the stiffness and root hold, making the hair simulate less like spaghetti and more like, well. Stiff hair !

Does the girl have a name by the way ? :D

  7. I know about stiffness and root hold, but see, when I only used a single spline (well i had many of those of course) for the entire hair length, then if the hair was too soft it would fall right through the scrunchies, however if i increased stiffness and root hold, the pigtails would look kind of wooden. Also i couldn't make hair constraints work for spline hair for some reason. So i decided i'd use 2 sets of hair for the hair on the head and the pigtais, both with different stiffness and root hold settings.
No she doesn't have a name, maybe something will come up later :D

  8. Hello there,
    Your work is really nice.
I like the model, the shader, the hair-style, the lighting, the render…
wow, yet everything you've done to the character !!
    What is her name?

  12. hi really nice character and rendering.
Can you share the way you created the eyes?
I tried several ways but couldnt get the same result as yours.
    thanks a lot.
